Women's Pain Matters: Rethinking Care

Friday 22 November 2024

For too long, women’s pain has been an unknown: under-diagnosed and under treated.

‘It took 14 years for my endo to be diagnosed and my pain dismissed for all those years. Only in the last 4 years have I truly felt heard and understood.’

Gender medical bias impacts women’s access to quality and equitable health care.

It even happens to nurses and midwives.

In a survey of ANMF members, 89% experienced acute pain, and of those:

  • over 66% felt dismissed by health professionals
  • 60% experienced barriers in accessing plans to help manage their pain

‘My period pain was dismissed as something that all women get. It wasn't until I was in my 30s when I had laparoscopic surgery and was diagnosed with extensive endometriosis that my pain was taken seriously.’

If this is a midwife or nurse's experience, imagine what it’s like for our patients?

Let’s use our expertise to change this!

The ANMF (Vic Branch) Women’s Pain Matters forum will cover:

  • gender bias in women’s healthcare
  • Indigenous women’s experiences
  • women’s health initiatives and improvements
  • solutions
