The environment in which we live directly affects our health, making looking after the environment a fundamental health issue. Whether it is air pollution, disease, heatwaves or bushfires, nurses and midwives are on the frontline, responding to the human casualties of climate change.

As the major and most trusted health workforce, we have an incredible opportunity to lead on sustainability in health and there are already many nurses and midwives leading the charge by instigating remarkable workplace projects.

The 2016 ANMF (Vic Branch) Health and Environmental Sustainability conference will continue to present these inspiring projects, including from Monash Health and Royal Melbourne Hospital. In addition we’ll get an update on Ros Morgan’s incredible sustainability journey.

The conference will also explore living a sustainable lifestyle and the links to health with the wonderful Stephanie Alexander OAM, who will speak about food and health and nurse Kate Borradaile who’ll discuss the connection between personal health, wellness and our natural environment.

Dr Anu Chand will present the Climate Change and Health Policy Assessment Project Report and Professor David Karoly will explain the links between climate change and El Niño.

Environmental impacts are having serious effects on rural and farming communities, and Dr Susan Brumby PhD, RN, RM, will lead discussion on changes in the bush and Tracie Lund will talk about the Hazelwood coal mine fire and the powerful community campaign to protect residents from the impacts.

The ANMF (Vic Branch) Health and Environmental Sustainability Conference is your chance to get inspired and be the change your workplace needs. Don’t miss the opportunity to come along and connect with other nurses and midwives who can support your journey towards a more sustainable life.
