2018 Ice methamphetamine addiction seminars

Nurse/midwife program and mental health programs

ANMF (Vic Branch) is partnering with Turning Point to deliver these seminars. These seminars are funded by the Victorian Government as an outcome of the Premier’s Ice Action Taskforce and will be held throughout 2018.

These face to face nurse/midwife program and mental health program seminars are designed to complement the standard Frontline Worker Ice Training Package.

Ice seminars - nurse/midwife program

These seminars will explore ice/methamphetamine use in Australia, the science of addiction and effects on brain and behaviour, and ice/methamphetamine use and mental health. This is a critical topic for nurses and midwives and provides an opportunity for professionals who may encounter a person affected by the addiction, to hear from industry experts and to ask any questions they may have.

On completion of this seminar attendees will be able to:

  • Reflect on the impact of their values and attitudes to methamphetamine use
  • Describe the pharmacological effects of methamphetamine
  • Identify cognitive and behavioural problems related to methamphetamine use
  • Describe withdrawal management
  • Respond effectively to challenging behaviour
  • List three methamphetamine information and referral services for patients and /or their family.

This course is relevant for nurses and midwives working across health including in the community, emergency departments and general practice.

Ice seminars - Mental health program

The seminars will explore Ice/methamphetamine use in Australia, the science of addiction and effects on brain and behaviour. Participants will develop an understanding of harms associated with methamphetamine use and dependence.

Brief interventions including harm reduction strategies that can be delivered by nurses in the clinical setting will be presented. Participants will be able to develop their skills in assessing a patient’s readiness to change and effectively refer patients to appropriate treatment services.

On completion of this seminar attendees will be able to:

  • Describe the signs, symptoms and behaviours (indicators) associated with different levels of methamphetamine use and identify health risks of emergency presentations including intoxication
  • Describe withdrawal symptoms
  • Identify key clinical guidelines for managing aggressive or agitated behaviour
  • Identify long term effects of ice use on patients who use methamphetamine
  • Identify individual and broader beliefs about methamphetamine use use and patients who use methamphetamine
  • Outline barriers and enablers to patients accessing services
  • Develop a range of questions to elicit the required information to help someone who is intoxicated on methamphetamine

These seminars will provide an opportunity for attendees to learn more about delivering health services to methamphetamine affected people and the potential mental health interactions.

This course is relevant for nurses and midwives working across the health sector including in the community, mental health and drug and alcohol services.
