ANMF Aged Care Physical and Chemical Restraint Symposium

ANMF Aged Care Physical and Chemical Restraint Symposium

7 hours CPD – register today

The ANMF Aged Care Physical and Chemical Restraint Symposium is for aged care registered and enrolled nurses, personal care workers and their managers.

The aged care royal commission’s recent interim report concluded ‘the ongoing and common use of restrictive practices in aged care represents severely substandard and unsafe care’.

So concerned about chemical restraint, the royal commission went beyond its brief by making recommendations in its interim report calling for urgent measures to reduce the over-reliance on restrictive practices.

The Morrison Government has responded with a $35.5 million package to improve medication management programs and deliver dementia training.

The ANMF Aged Care Physical and Chemical Restraint Symposium will clarify new responsibilities around use of physical and chemical restraint introduced to the Quality of Care Principles 2014 on 1 July 2019.

The symposium sessions will include:

  • An expert panel and Q&A
  • GPs and geriatricians in aged care: a team approach to restraint use
Professor Susan Kurrie, Faculty of Medicine, University of Sydney, Curran Professor in Health Care of Older People; Director, NHMRC Cognitive Decline Partnership Centre; and specialist geriatrician
  • A human rights perspective of chemical and physical restraint in residential aged care
    Victoria's Public Advocate, Colleen Pearce
  • Restrictions on psychotropics: a blunt instrument
    Juliane Samara, Nurse Practitioner
  • The cranky daughter’s perspective
  • Residents’ rights versus staff safety
Gordon Legal, Special Counsel, Philip Gardner

A full program will be available soon.

This is an important symposium for all aged care nurses, personal care workers and their managers.
