Motivational interviewing (MI) is collaborative method for evoking and strengthening conversations about behaviour change, bringing together a set of values and principles and skills to assist patients to recognise and resolve ambivalence and find the motivation to pursue the changes that are important for them. 

The workshop will offer an opportunity to:

  • gain a clear understanding of what MI is including updates and changes to the framework
  • review and practice core clinical skills
  • increase ability to work collaboratively and effectively with resistance and ambivalence
  • practice skills in identifying, eliciting and reinforcing change talk.

Sharon Patterson’s role in alcohol and other drugs education, training and clinical treatment spans over 30 years and is supported by clinical experience in the AOD sector and a background in mental health nursing. Sharon has had clinical experience in a range of AOD treatment settings. Her work at Turning Point includes development and delivery of training and education programs for general practitioners, nurses, primary care health workers and the alcohol and other drugs workforce. Sharon has been a key trainer in the delivery of motivational interviewing to nurses through ANMF.

Sandra Roeg’s AOD experience spans several decades in AOD education and training as well as clinical experience within the sector supported by a background in psychiatric nursing, psychotherapy and mental health sciences. Sandra has been instrumental in the development and delivery of training to the AOD sector in Victoria as part of the minimum qualification strategy and also to higher education undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Sandra is passionate in supporting clinicians to have an effective working knowledge of motivational interviewing. Sandra is a registered member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT).
